New generation of young historians from the Institute of History at the Slovak Academy of Science published essays on the last two decades of Central Europe, entitled Overcoming the Old Borders. According to the authors, their common aim is to overcome nationally-oriented approaches to historiography and excessive emphasis on political history, which has been typical of the region.

CEF observation: Many might ask how far the authors, with their choice of topics and methodology, managed to meet their objectives.  Yet within the context of local historiography, the endeavour is most interesting.
